Stip: Number Bonds to 20

Stip is throwing a party. Lots of guests are coming, and there is still plenty to get ready: balloons, bunting, presents and twenty cups. Your child helps him and practises number bonds, adding and subtracting within 20.

What your child learns

Each part of the party is a step, in the same order as at school. Within each step, Stip starts with small numbers, and only when those go smoothly do the bigger ones come.

Number bonds within 10: splitting a number into two parts.

Finding the missing part of a number.

Adding and subtracting within 10, small steps first.

Number bonds to 10: which number makes ten?

Tens and ones: the teen numbers.

Adding and subtracting within 20, without crossing ten.

Bridging ten when adding: make ten first.

Bridging ten when subtracting: back to ten first.

Our teaching approach

How Stip teaches number bonds to 20

Number bonds are learnt in small steps. The app follows the order used at school, and checks what your child can already do before moving on.

What school asks for

In England, number bonds and adding and subtracting within 20 are part of Year 1 and Year 2 of the National Curriculum. In Ireland they come in First and Second Class. The eight parts of Stip's party follow that path, from bonds within 5 to crossing ten.

Small numbers first

Each part starts small. With the balloons, your child first finds bonds within 5, then 6 and 7, and only then 8, 9 and 10. Swapped sums come early and in pairs: you can work out 2 + 7 as 7 + 2.

Moving on when it goes smoothly

A round has six questions. It goes smoothly when no more than one question was not right first time; using help also counts as not first time. After three smooth rounds, that part of the party is done and the next one opens.

Every wrong answer means something

The wrong answers are mistakes children really make: counting one too many, adding when they need to find the other part, giving the number that is already there. If your child picks one, Stip says what went wrong, and they can try again.

Crossing ten: make 10 first

For 8 + 5, Stip fills the top row of the twenty frame first, then adds the rest. The counters for the first number are red, those for the second are blue. When taking away, he goes back to 10 first.

Explanations, help and everything read aloud

Stip explains each new part with the number house and the ten frame. If your child nearly gets it twice, he shows the steps one at a time. Stip reads every question aloud, so your child can practise before they read well.

Every wrong answer in the app has its own sentence like this: for 5, Stip says “You added. Here you need to find the other part.”

Privacy notice for the app

Who is the app for?

For children in Year 1 and Year 2, when number bonds and adding and subtracting within 20 come up at school. In Ireland, that is First and Second Class. When you set up the app, you choose your child’s year and where they start.

My child already knows their number bonds. Do they have to start at the beginning?

No. When you set up the app, you choose where your child starts, for example at number bonds to 10 or at bridging ten. You can change this later in the parents’ corner; anything already done is kept.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account and no login. Everything your child does stays on this device.

Does the app work without the internet?

Yes. The app never connects to the internet. Stip’s voice is inside the app too.

Where are the settings for parents?

Tap the lock in the top right corner of Stip’s party. You first answer a sum, so your child can’t get in by accident. There you choose where your child practises, turn reading aloud on or off, and set how many questions are in a round.

Can several children practise on one device?

Yes. Choose Add a child in the parents’ corner. Each child has their own place at the party and their own Stip book.

When can I get the app?

Stip: Number Bonds to 20 is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and to Google Play for Android.
